I Cannot reccomend Gino7's video on the music of the Mother game franchise enough. It's a phenomenal watch that dives deep into the games many musical inspirations, including a segment on the Beatles. It's no secret the Beatles were an inflence on the soundtrack for Mother 1 and Earthbound, there's samples from Seargant Pepper's in the latter game. But the mention of Paul McCartney's RAM was a new one for me. I know close to jack on the Beatles, and even less on the solo carrers of the individual musicans. I was going to do a deep dive into each (including Yoko Ono) for the website called 'The Beatles After The Beatles' but I'm not the right person for it. Plus, then I'd have to buy all of the albums! I already did that for one artist and that's plenty. Still, on nothing but a vague reccomendation I went and listened to RAM, and now it's one of my favorite albums.
I mean it! I wish I could put it on the top 25 most significant albums list, it would probably make top 15 if not top 20. I adore this album so so much, and I've also listened to practically no other music by Paul and/or Linda McCartney. This album stands on its own, seperate from the Beatles or Wings. It's its own thing, with its proto-indie sound and absurdist lyrics. I do thankfully have a CD for this album, it was a gift from a good friend. It's one of the few CDs I brought with me to Minneapolis when I moved, I don't want to be far from RAM just like I don't want to be far from Strange Fire or my RUSH collection.
This album is happy times to me, it represents something optimistic about life and the future. The history of the album attests to that too, being the first thing McCartney recorded after the Beatles that wasn't shrouded in secrecy and shame. This album feels like it's proud to exist, it doesn't want to hide itself away in a shed it wants to be loud and verbose. It feels like an album made by someone who can breathe for the first time in a long time. But I'm waxing poetic on subjects I'm not intimately familiar with again, my apologies. Listen to this album when you get a chance, it's available wherever music is bought or streamed.
